SHOOTING PRIZES.

♦ .MRS GODLEY AND SENIOR CADETS. MOVEMENT TN CHRISTCHURCH. Tho proposal of Mrs Godley, wife of tho Commandant of tho Now Zealand Territorial Forces, that tho women of New Zealand should establish a fund to provide shooting trophies for Senior Cadets was further considered to-day at a meeting of ladies in the City Council Library, convened by Mrs Holland. ' Tho Mayor (Mr H. Holland) presided. Tho Mayor said that subscriptions had been corning iu slowly, but latterly there had been a more generous response, and the movement was on a fair way to success. Mrs Godley wrote stating that her idea had been to have a Central Fund, jn order that tho movement might be a national one, and that the larger cities and towns might help the poorer and scattered districts and uackblocks. When it waa ascertained how much money was available, a decision could bo arrived at as to the value of the prizes, and cups of equal value could bo given to each of the 363 Senior Cadet companies in the dominion. If tho general opinion in Christchurcii was that money raised locally should bo spent locally, her purpose would bo assured, 60 long as each company got a cup. The cups could bo challenge cups, the Cadet making the best scoro in tho annual musketry course to hold the cup for a year, his name to be engraved on it. A medal might also be given. There were about thirty companies in the Christchurcii district, and a fund of £2OO should provide quite good cups and medals for tho first year. Possibly tho companies would bear the expense of medals in subsequent years. Lady Islington had given a dominion Challenge Cup for the company making the best aggregate score.

Mrs Holland reported that she had received in subscriptions £2o 4s Od.

The Alayor said that after hearing Mrs Godley'H views he was of opinion that it would bo advisable to support n national movement, rather than a local one. He thought that the money should be handed over to Airs Godiey. It was resolved to hand tlte money over to Airs Godiey for the formation of a national land.

In reply to a question, the Mayor said that probably it would bo wise to circularise soma of the country folk for contributions. Ho understood that a .similar movement was on foot on the Peninsula. Airs Batchelor said that on the return of the New Zealand Cadets from Canada they would go through the dominion, and give exhibitions on the lines of those given in Canada. The Cadets would arrive in Christchureh on November 8, and an effort might bo made to collect money for the Cadets' prizes if an exhibition were given, say, on the Friday or Saturday night in the Barracks.

the suggestion- was cordially agreed to, and it was-resolved to communicate with the Defence authorities to ascertain tho Cadets' programme in Christchurch.

It was also agreed that tho ladies present should continue their collecting. Mrs Smythe suggested that , the " Lyttelton Times'' and "Pre--;..;"

Companies might give cups and tradespeople might also he approached. The meeting was adjourned '.'oar a fortnight.
