CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon. Mr F, E. Jones, rice-president, occupied the chair, owing to the indisposition of the president, the Hon H. F. Wigram. Mr A. Kaye wrote asking for leave of absence for about four mouths owing to his visiting America. Leave of absence was granted. The Minister of Agriculture replied to a letter in connection with the branding of oats required by the Commonwealth Government, stating that he had made representations to the Prime Minister of Australia on the subject, and had received a communication from linn to the effect that the matter would receive attention. As soon as a further reply was received, it would be communicated to the Council. The Grain Merchants' Association wrote regarding grain sales in store, distinctive stripes on sacks, and the weight of sacks of grain carried by the railways of the Commonwealth as compared with New Zealand. The matter of distinctive stripes on sacks was referred to the Produce Sectional Committee to suggest appropriate colours for the various sizes of sacks. T'ho Adelaide and Melbourne Chambers of Commerce acknowledged receipt of a letter on the subject of differential shipping freights from Europe. The Melbourne Chamber asked to be advised when further information was received. The 'Secretary of the CulverdenWaiau Railway League wrote asking that the Chamber should be represented on the deputation to wait on the Government urging the construction of the line. It was stated that, in reply, a telegram had been sent regretting that the Chamber was unable to arrange for a delegate to atteud the deputation. The Minister of Railways Tvrote stating that he could not see his way to bind the department to undertake the weighing of produce for trade purposes. No effort would be spared to ensure accuracy in weights. The Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs wrote stating that the Secretary of State, Washington, had been informed that Ah- Kaye would represent the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce at the fifth international Cong-tress of Chambers of Commerce, to be held in Boston in September. The chairman of the Lands Committee forwarded a copy of the Land Agents Registration Bill, and stated that the committee would be pleased to hoar evidence i'\ Wellington on Tuesday, August 20. It was decided, to refer the matter to a meeting of land agents for consideration.

Mr S. IT. ivlorQton wrote asking permission to exhibit a pictiwe in the Chamber liaU. The request was granted.

It ivas decided to Mr Gilbert Anderson to act. / The question of the revision of the scale of mercantile charges was referred to the proposed meeting of land agents to deal with. Mr A. E. Oraddoek wrote resigning his position on the Council. The resignation was accepted with regret. The Kaikoura County Council wrote stating that the Government had favourably considered the question of the construction of the Hapuku bridge. It was intended that a deputation which was to wait 0:1 the Minister of Public Works in reference to the South Island Main Trunk railway slifinld urge tho speedy erection of the bridge. The secretary of the South Island Main Trunk Railway League also asked the Chamber to co-operate with the deputation. The president and Mr Mp.rriner werf* appointed to represent tho Chamber on the deputation.
