BETTING NOTICES.
FINE £5. [Peb Press Association.] WELLINGTON, August 13. Mr Riddell, S.M., delivered his reserved judgment to-day in a case in which William Scott and Henry Martindale were charged with publishing notification of betting on horse races. The defence was that a letter directed by Scott and Martindale to J- Morris, Lower Hutt, was meant for Morris, a client of theirs, and that it was the property of the defendants until it actually reacked the person to whom it was addressed. The letter was got by Detective Cassells, who had written to the defendants in tho name of J. Morris. In giving judgment, Mr Riddell said that the evidence as to the existence of such person as Morris, was?very meagre, and the defendants admitted never having seen him. Their ready response to the detective's letter showed that they intshded to publish the information contained in the chart to the person requesting it and that that person actually received it, although writing under an assumed name. A fine of £5 with costs would be imposed, but leave to appeal would be granted.
