His Excellency the Governor Lord Islington, accompanied by Captain Estcourt, A.D.C., arrived from Wellington this morning. Information has been received by Lady Islington of the death of her father, Mr Henry Duridas, who married Catherine, a daughter of Lord Napier of Magdala. Mr T. M. Wilford, M.P., arrived from Wellington this morning. Tho Hon C. M. Luke, M.L.C., arrived from Wellington this morning. Captain J. B. Rainey, marine superintendent of the Tyser Line, Limited, arrived from Wellington to-day. The Revs J. Clover, T. H. Lyon, J. Cocker, \V. S. Potter, W. Ready, T. Tait and J. Dawson were passengers by the Maori from Wellington this morning. Sir Joseph Ward, Lady Ward and Miss Ward arrived in Christchurch this morning. 'lhey attended the Canterbury Jockey Club's race meeting at Riccarton during the day, .and they will return to Wellington this evening. Mr John Craig M'Kerrow, a wellknown resident of Wellington, died yesterday. For many years deceased was a runholder in South Canterbury, and carried on a land and estate business in Wellington. He also investigate old soldiers' claims on behalf of the Government. Passengers by the Maori from 'Wellington thia morning included Dr H. Pope, Dr Robertson, Mr and Mrs W. G. Stead, Mr and Mrs E. W. Wilson, Messrs W. H. Turnbull, J. A. Haggitt, W. IT. Penrose, 11. Lewis, A. W. Blair, T. W. Kirk, S. G.- Nathan, IT. Hay T. B. Crawshaw,. W. F. Wellwood, S. J. Hindmarsh, C. W. Rutherford and A. Begg. A Press Association telegram from Wellington says that Mr C. S. Nixon, Collector of Customs and Dominion Inspector. has resigned on the ground of ill-health. Mr Nixon joined the service as a cadet forty years ago, and was appointed to his present post in Wellington a few years ago. Probably he will bo succeeded hv Mr_ E. R. Brabazon, collector at Dunedin.
