COLLIERS ON STRIKE. United Press Association —By Elcctrio Telegraph—Copyright. (Received August 13, 9.20 a.m.) LONDON, August 12. At Ebbwvale 2200 colliers have struck, owing to the lampmen withdrawing from the Federation in order to join the Engineers and Stokers' Union. The strikers attribute the Recession to a desire to avoid levies, to repay the borrowings during the coal strike.. TRADE UNION BANK. The "Star" says that the trade unions are dissatisfied at the banks' reluctance to advance strike pay upon investments. The proposal under consideration was that the unions should pool their accumulated funds as capital for a trade union bank. WELSH COAL. Tho Welsh coal-owners have secured foreign naval orders, at a shilling per ton over the rate obtained in 1911. The rise is due to tho necessity for meeting the increased cost of production. RESULT OP THE INSURANCE ACT. As a result of the National Insurance Act the membership of the. Shop Assistants and Warehousemen's Union has increased from 25,000 to 50,000, and other unions have increased from 10 to 12 per cent. NEW ZEALAND COLLIERS. [Per Association.] DUNEDIN, August 13. The ''Star" says editorially that the coal miners hint at a coalition with the Australian colliers for the set purpose of smashing the statutory arbitration. On the other hand, the mineowners intend to adopt an attitude of strength, and probably the only conditions acceptable to the employers will be the ensuring of a binding settlement of disputes for fixed periods.
