MUNICIPAL MATTERS.

TO Till EDITOR. Sir, —Now that tho Mayor has returned from Wellington, where he was a delegate to the Municipal Conference, I respectfully wish to call his attention to a few local matters. How much longer are tho public to be annoyed by the abominable nuisance caused by shopkeepers, between 8 and 9 in tho morning, sweeping and watering the footpaths in front of their businessplaces ? One has either to run tho gauntlet or step out on to the road to avoid being covered with dust or water, or both. Some timo ago tho Mayor mado some reference to this matter, and hinted that tho practico would havo to bo stopped. However, it appears to me that the nuisance is increasing rather than decreasing. Tho time now chosen for this work is altogether too lato for a city liko Christchurch. All tho scavengering work of tho citv should be done between tho evening and early morning. Christchurch should take a lesson from Melbourne, where tho city's scavengering work is done as I stato. Then look at t tho rubbish and refuse boxes left outsido of premises on the edge of the footpaths. Can any other city_ boast of such a miscellaneous collection of dust-bins? Whero is tho regulation dust-bin promised by the Cmmcil? I pity the men who go round with the carts to lift tho so-called dustbins, from which they are compelled, to inhale all kinds of smells and microbes. There is also a danger to tho public from a health point of view. The system is a disgrace to tho citv and Council. We are behind the times with «. vengeance.—l am, etc., BURGESS. Christchurch. August 13.
