STEAMER BEACHED. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received May 2, 10.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, May 2. When the steamer Peregrine, with over 100 passengers and a large general cargo, was leaving tho River Plato, the cover of an old porthole became displaced and tho water gained rapidly. The captain* beached the vessel at tho entrance to the bay to prevent her sinking, and the passengers were landed. The damage to the cargo, cannot, be ascertained until the steamer has been temporarily repaired and reborthed.
