AUCKLAND'S TRAFFIC.
NEW ROAD SCHEME. [Per Pbess Association.] AUCKLAND, May 1. A big scheme for relieving traffic in Queen Street and. providing a new circular route for tram and vehicular traffic out of the city on an easier grade than at present exists was outlined by the Mayor (Mr C. J. Parr) on the occasion of his installation this afternoon. The Mayor said that there was urgent necessity for finding another outlet for traffic from the lower levels of the wharves and storehouses to the higher levels of the city. Queen Street was becoming congested. 111 addition to the trams which ran up and down, a very great amount .of heavy vehicular traffic proceeded up the main thoroughfares. The new route had recently been suggested to him by one of the city building inspectors. This, it was proposed, should run from Custom Street East along Jermyn Street to Parliament Street, and should enter Symonds Street at the Supreme Court corner. He estimated that £IO,OOO would be the sum required to make this first-class thoroughfare. The grade would be one in twenty-live, the easiest obtainable from the water-front to the higher levels.
