All the Canterbury trout streams were reported clear this morning. The telegraph office has received a message from Berne advising that communication with Assam, Burmali, China and ftiam has been restored. A man named J. Fulton, alias J. Bartlev, who was charged at Wellington to-day with forgery,- was remanded to appear at Christcliurch <to-morrow.

A new principle affecting marriage wa« put forward at the Magistrate's Court this morning by a female witness who volubly affirmed that she was "entitled to marry" one of the male witnesses because she had been keeping company with him for four years. Tho Education Board is taking proceeding through the. Police Court against parents who fail to send their children to school regularly. A number of truancy cases were heard before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court this morning and a number were adjourned. Colonel Cosgrove has advised General Baden-Powell that in the interest of the Bov Scout movement it is absolutely necessary that as much as possible should be made of bis visit, but that ho will advise Mayors of Central Cities to make tho functions as brief as possible and that lie wishes to be excused publio speeches. The Scout programme will, therefore, remain unaltered.

The Linwood Brass Band will pla.v the following programme on the Victoria Square rotunda on Sunday afternoon, commencing at three o'clock:— March, "The Xatiqj&al Guard" (A. F. Speaking of motor-cars he said tnat the trade had great possibilities, information going to prove that English and American firms controlled the bulk of it.

' The completion of the new chief post office at Auckland, which is expected to be ready for opening by May 31, will be followed by other important extensions of the city postal services. Tho central offices in Hhortland Street will be maintained as a branch receiving office for all postal and telegraphic matter. and for tlio transaction of moneyorder and postal-note business. Tho plans have not yet been prepared for the building in Welleslev Street in which the telephone exchange is to be accommodated. Some time ago a tender was accepted for tho installation of a pneumatic tube system which will connect the branch offices with, tho central buildings. The contractor was tillable to carry out the undertaking, and arrangements have been made in England for the work.

Tho third annual general meeting of the St Luke's Hockey Club was held on Monday, the Rev Canon W. Walnisley Sedgwick presiding. The report showed a satisfactory state of affairs, and the balance-sheet, although showing a deficit, was very satisfactory on the year's working. The, following officers were elected lor the ensuing year; —President, the Rev Canon W. "Walmsley Sedgwick ; club captain, Mr W. S. G. Cameron (re-elected) ; secretary, Mr A. E. Cresswell; treasurer, Mr P. Crawford ; committee, the president, club captain and secretary, the Rev .H. Monaghan, Messrs F. Crawford. J. Woods and P. Cameron; selection committee, the Rev H. Monagban, Messrs \V. S. G. Cameron and F. Crawford; auditor, Mr George Baker ; delegates to Canterbury Hockey Association. Messrs A. E. Cresswell and F. Crawford. The opening day was fixed for Saturday. Votes of thanks were passed to the Rev F. B. Redgrave. Messrs L. Rosworth and F. Crawford and members of the retiring committee for the excellent work done by them during the past season.
