GAOL STRIKE.
SOLITARY CONFINEMENT PRESCRIBED. MEN RETURN TO WORK. The recalcitrant prisoners at Lytteltou Gaol who refused to do tlioir "hard labour" as .1 protest against the rigorous search they were subjected to, are being dealt with summarily. The departmental inquiry was continued yesterday by l>r Hay, Inspector of Prisons, and the Rev J. L. Kayll, the visiting Justices, Messrs J. Garrard and .W. Collins, being also present. A number of prisoners wore further ex-amined,-but the inquiry will be resumed to-day, and will probably continue until Saturday. It is understood that a number of the " strikers " have received terms of solitary confinement, and this belief is strengthened by the fact that a number of the prisoners could be heard yelling and how'ing lustily from their cells in the "solitary" quarter. It is also understood that good conduct marks have been forfeited by the strikers.
A meeting of the Board of Governors of the M'Lcan Institute was held yesterday. The Mayor (Mr J. J. Dougall) was in the chair, arid others present were Bishop Grimes and the Revs C. H. Laws and J. Mackenzie, Mosdames A. C. Sandstein and J. FT. Wilson, and Messrs G. Harper, H. W. Bishop, S.M.. and F. Horrell. The Rev C. H. Laws took his seat in succession to the Rev C. H. Garland, resigned, and was welcomed by the chairman. A motion was passed appreciative of Mr Garland's services on the Board. The reports of the Visiting and Institutions Committees were adopted. The Financial Committee's report, which was adopted, stated that Mr G. Harper had been elected chairman of the committee. Accounts amounting to £342 17s 4d were passed for payment.
