OBITUARY.
F. do C. M ALET. Tlie doath is announced of .Mr Frederick do Carteret Mulct, formerly chairman of the Hank of New Zealand. Mr Malet was born in England, and arrived in New Zealand as a lad of sixteen years, in 1800, landing at, Auckland. Ho was for four years engaged amongst stock in Canterbury and Otago, and was appointed Warden's clerk at Hokitika in 18t3o. He .subsequently became clerk to the resident Magi strate at Hokitika, under the General Government, and was trans ferred to Christclmrcli in 18H8, remaining in liis position in Christchurch till 187 H. Ho was Registrar of New Zealand University from 1872 to 1874, and Secretary of "the Board of Governors of Canterbury College from 1873 to 18711. In 187(5 Mr .Malet became Registrar of the Supremo Court .'it ('hristchurch, and was elected a member of the College Board of Governors, acting as chairman of the .Board from 1885 to 189-f, and resigning from the Hoard in 1895. Ho .studied law, and was admitted to the bar in ISBI, practicing as a barrister and solicitor in Cluistchureh till 1887. He visited ICngland in the years 1888 and 1889. In 1891 ho became managing director of the '' Lyttolton Times Company.,'' on the resignation of Mr William Beeves, and continued till the appointment of Mr J. O. Wilkin as managing director in 189.'). In 189(1-1897 Mr Malet. was again elected a member of the College Hoard of Governors. On December 19. 1901, Mr Malet was elected a director of the Christchurch Meat/ Company, and on February 28 of the following year ho was elected chairman of directors, continuing in this position until the last annual meeting, when he vacated the chair to ill-hea'th. During his period ns chairman the Company went through some very critical periods, and it wok very largely owing to Mr Malet's ability and energy that the Company hold's its present strong position. From 1895 to 1897 Mr Malet was a memlier of the Hoard of Governors of the Canterbury College of Agriculture, in 1898 lie was appointed hv the Government, ns a director of the .Bank of New Zealand, in which office he continued till three years ago, acting as chairman from 1902 to .19011. .Mr Male! was also a directiir ol the Permanent Investment, and Loan Association of Canterbury.
