THE PLUNKKT SHIELD
i OTAGO v. CANTERBURY. ' CHALLENGERS COLLAPSE BEFORE REESE. CANTERBURY WINS BY THREE WICKETS. This morning, on a wicket that was mado helpful to the bowlers by tlie overnight rain, Otago collapsed before Reese, and tho innings closed after thirty-two minutes' play for 52, leaving Canterbury 01 to get to win. With 32 on for five wickets, Otago resumed, Watson (4 not out) facing Sandman, and getting the last ball, a full toss, for a single to square-leg, after which he got lleese round with the same stroke for four, and a drive for one in the bowler's next over put him into double figures. With the last ball of the same over, however, Watson was bowled, by Reese with a ball that was the replica of the one that took Hopkins on tho previous day. 39—6—10. Ramsden came in, and a single to Eckhold through long-on brought up 4.0. The new batsman bad a narrow escape in his first stand against Sandman, the ball coming in and beating him, but the pad saved him. The next ball he got away for a pair. A three past cover to Eckhold made him 10, and a pair to Ramsden off the next ball brought np 50. .hi Reese's next over Eckhold tried to drive a swerve and lost his off-stump. 50—7—10. Reese at this stage had taken four wickets lor 19 runs. Downes came in, and Bennett replaced Sandman, who had not found his length, and his first over saw Ramsden play all round a good one, giving Bennett the fine figures, two wickets for 7 runs. 50—8—5. Bannerman joined Downes, notched a single through slips, and then saw Bennett beat his partner with a ball that came off tho pitch - like lightning, and just cleared the middle stump. The next over Bennett got Downes's leg stump with an off-break. 51—9 —0. Eckhoff came in, but after scoring a single he was beaten by Reese, and the innings closed at 12.12 p.m., 107 minutes from the time Hopkins opened, for 52. In the interval a shower fell, making the ball greasy, and at 12.30 p.m. Canterbury opened with Lusk and Caygill, the former facing M'Farlane, bowling from tho railway end. Downes took the bowling from the pavilion end. Two singles, and then Lusk cut a lialfvolley from M'Farlane up out of the reach of third man, which went for four, after which another four past mid-off made him ten. He followed this with another boundary drive, placed neatly just a bit further in. After making a confident 16, Lusk found a nice one from Downes that came in a lot too good for him. 17—1 —l6. Carlton came in, and after some quiet play Caygill put M'Farlane to tho off for two, followed by a single past the bowler, bringing up 20. 1%0 runs later, after a lot of very cautious play, Eckhoff went on in place of M'Farlane, and Caygill scored two from a bad troke through slips, tho ball going just out of reach. The luncheon adjournment was taken with tho score at 25.
After lunch Carlton put his first ball from Downes up in the slips. Bannerman touched the hall but it fell safely. Another missed chance crave Carlton a boundary, bringing 30 up. Then Carlton got Eekhoff p. way for four. Slow play followed, Caygill reaching 10 with a .single through tho slips. In Downes's next over Cayeill was smartly taken behind the wickets. 40 —2—lo. Sims was almost beaten by his first hall from Dowries, and then he and Carlton gave a :prottv exhibition of running between the wickets. Bannerman was brought on and the field spread out. Sims brought 50 np with a drive to the boundary. He was not at homo to Downes, but he pulled him for a pair. Tho next ball he played on to his pads, and it rolled on tho wicket, just displacing a bail. 56—3 —-16. Reese joined Carlton, and lifted Bannerman to the boundary. _ He ran into double figures quickly, bringing 70 up with a nice drive along the carpet. Five runs later tho Canterbury captain was out. caught by Hopkins off Ramsdon. 75 —I—lG.1—IG. Patrick, who was next, was snapped up by Condliffe, who*"© keeping had been clean and smart throughout the game. Norman got his leg in front to Ramsden. and Sandman was caught by Eekhoff off tho same bowler, theso three wickets having added 9 runs. 8-I—7—o. Ollivier took a rnnidon from "Ramsden, and then Carlton hooked Downes for 4. There was almost a casualty over a call for a short one. but a slow return saved Ollivier, a single resulting.
