PRIZE DISTRIBUTIONS.

ST MATTHEWS CHURCH DAY SCHOOLS, ST ALBANS. At the breaking-up ceremonies in St Matthew's Church Day Schools oil December 15 the vicar (Rev P. B. Haggitt) explained the object of their existence. Their main object was not to compete with the State schools in secular education, but to give Church people the opportunity of having their children taught in school hours as the most important subject on the syllabus the sacred truths of Christianity. In the Church schools tho Government syllabus was used, and their work in regard to that syllabus was inspected by Government inspectors; but they put God" and tho knowledge of God first. The Rev B. H. Shore, M.A., who examined the schools in Scripture, spoke very highly cf the work dene and of the reverence of the children, 3ayiug that in the two highest divisions of the main school the.answers of th'i children were equal to anything he had ever known in corresponding standards of the Church schools in England.
