There was a good attendance at the meeting of the Canterbury Philosophical Institute* last evening. In the"absence of tho president _(Mr A. M. Wright), Mr !'• 31. Laing presided. The 'evening was occupied by remarks on the bokmv of tho Snencer Mountains, near Hanrner. by Mr Laiug, remarks on Maori methods of bird-snar-ing, hy Mr J. Drummond, and a short address on peculiarities' of native species of clematis, by Mr S. Paoce. ■All the subjects were discussed. _ Before the meeting. closed, tho chairman Raid that Dr 0. ('"nilton, treasurer of the Tnstituto, would- leave for England this week, and all members of the Institute h' j n a pleasant trip.
