CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, November 1. (Before Mr T. Wallace, J.P., and Mr W. Barrett, J.P.) Drunkenness.—Two statutory first offenders for drunkenness were each fined 6s, in default twenty-four hours imprisonment. Remanded. —John Henry Jones (Mr Leathern) was charged with having failed to provide for his illegitimate child, born on June 23. A remand until Friday was allowed, to enable the police to communicate with the child's mother. A Burn-ham Absconder. Edward Neil Whitten, an absconder from Burnliam. was charged with having stolen at Halswoll, on October 31, the sum of 3s 7d in cash, ten keys, one safety razor, ©no watch, one knife, one bone ring and ono silver horse-shoe, tho property of some person or persons unknown. He was remanded till Saturday, and was ordered to be returned to Burnham in the meantime. A Damaued Coat. John Barry pleaded guilty to having assaulted Thomas Eric Sincock, for whom Mr Cassidy appeared. Informant stated that ho and a companion were going home on the ni»'ht of October 23 when they met defendant, who used profane language and cut informant's coat with a knife. Defendant said ho was drunk at the time, and did not remember tho occurrence. He was certain he had not damaged tho coat, as he had no knife in his possession at the time. All he had with him was a pork pie. A fine of £2 and costs was inflicted, £l of which was directed to be paid to informant as restitution for his coat. Without a Lkjxit.— For having cycled at night without a light Harry Bryant was fined 7s and costs. A Shiuous Charge,—Emily Jano Wackeldine, alias Scrivener (Mr Gresson), appeared on remand on a charge of having, at Cliristchnrch, on September 29, performed an illegal operation, with intent to procure a miscarriage. Mr Cnssidy watched the case on behalf of the woman on whom the operation was alleged to havo been performed. The Court was cleared during tho hearing of tlio case. After evidenoe had boon taken, accused was committed to the Supremo Court for trial, bail being allowed, accused in £2OO and two sureties of £2OO each.
LYTTELTON. Wednesday. November 1. (Before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M.) Drink and Comvlications.—.John Spaar, on remand, pleaded guilty to a charge of having boon drunk on. Saturday last, and also to having made a breach of a prohibition order. He was fined 10s and costs on each offence, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment.
Maintenance. —Harry Olsen ivas ordered to contribute Gs weekly to the support of his son in the Christchnrch Pteceiving Heme. BnnAni ov Prohibition Oiidkp..—Jeromiah Sullivan was charged with having on October 27 and 30 procured liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. He pleaded guilty and was fined 10s and costs en each charge.—John Whitborg pleaded guilty to a charge of having assisted Sullivan to obtain drinkT knowing him to be prohibited. He was lined 60s and costs, iu default one mouth's imprisonment. The Magistrate's remarked that men like accused wero a nuisance to the community, and only encouraged, others to break the law.
