The latest returns in connection with tho Liverpool Plains by-election, which was held on Saturday, show that Mr W. G. Ashford, the Labour candidate, defeated the Opposition candidate, Mr John Perry, by 514 votes. Possibly a few postal votes have still to come, ■ Four of the six members of the Parliamentary Democratic Party have resigned from the party owing to a difference of opinion regarding the advisability of contesting the Maitland seat againat the Government opposition candidate. The seceding members state that if there are to be no triangular contents tho carrying on of the party amounts to a farce.
