A FAMOUS JOURNALIST. United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright. (Received October 7, 5.5 a.m.) VANCOUVER, October 6. A message from New York announces the death of Mr William Eleroy Curtis, on© of the foremost journalists of the United States. (Mr William Eleroy Curtis was born at Akron,, Oregon, on November 5, 1850, and was educated at the Western Reserve College. Adopting journalism as a profession , ho was on the staff of the Chicago " Inter Ocean," from 1873 to 1887, Washington correspondent of the "Chicago 110001x1." from 1887 to 1901, and since March, 1901, has been connected with the Chicago " Record Herald." He acted as Special Commissioner for the United States to the Central and South American Republics, and was executive officer of the International American Conference; 1889-90. From 1890 to 1903 he was director of the-Bureau of American Republics, and from 1891 to 1893 he was chief of the Latin-American Department and Historical Section of the Chicago Exposition. He was Special Commissioner for the Chicago Exposition to Madrid, and Special Envoy to the Queen Regent of Spain and Pope Leo XIII, in 1892. He wrote a largo number of books, principally dealing with the history of the various countries on the American continent, and also a number of works of travel in various parts of the world.)

MAJOR-GENERAL HOAD. (Received October 7, 9.45 a.m.) MELBOURNE, October 7. The death is announced of MajorGeneral Hoad, chief of the general staff of the Commonwealth military forces, and ex-Inspector-General. He recently suffered a nervous breakdown, and ob tained six months' leavo, but his death was •unexpected. Major-General Hoad rose from the ranks. DOWAGER COUNTESS OF SEAFIELD. (Received October 7, 10 a.m.) LONDON. October 6. The death of the Dowager Countess of Seafield is announced.
