I The radio station at Wellington reported that no vessels are within wireless range to-day. There were showers at Auckland and Nuggets this morning, but between these points fine weather was general. The Coal and Blanket Fund Committee will not receive any more applications for relief after Tuesday nest. A meeting of Fendalton ratepayers will be Held on Thursday evening next to consider the question of extending the Fendalton tram service. The Woolston Brass Band will give a concert to-morrow afternoon in the Victoria Square rotunda, ill aid of the fnnds for the Coronation Memorial Home. The Christchurch Tramway Board is still waiting for the Order in Council j permitting the use of the new loop on ! Moorhouse Avenue. The double track i on Papanui Road is nearing completion. The Christchurch City Council and the Spreydon Borough Council have under consideration the making of new-by-laws, and Mr H. G. Ell, MP., has written to them suggesting that the questiqn of fixing a minimum area for a building site in the residential areas should be considered. He points out the desirableness of avoiding mistakes of the past in regard to the overcrowding of buildings, and that this can be done only by imposing conditions that must be "observed. Many districts in the dominion have already passed bylaws fixing the minimum area upon which a house can be built. The Otautau Town Board has passed a by-law in this respect; the Mount Albert Road Board has fixed 50ft as the minimun; frontage; the Epsom Road Board and One Tree Hill Road Board provide for a minimum area of a quarter of an acre and for a minimum frontage of 86ffc; and the Lower Hutt Borough Council provides for a minimum area of an eighth of an acre. There is at present on view in thePublic Library a relief map of the country between Lyttelton Heads and Christchurch, showing tho railway route from the port to Christ-church, iand the route of tho proposed canal. The site of the proposed harbour at Sumner is also clearly shown. The Kodel has been placed in the room until tely used as a ladies' reading room. '• A Dunedin telegram says that Mr Bcott, secretary of the South Island {Dairy Association, reports that cheese 'buyers are exceptionally keen, and '"that business could now be done at 6d ■f.o.b. The effects of the dry weather in the northern hemisphere seem to justify the expectation of higher prices than, more than probably, has ever been the case, and he sees no reason to : be in a hurry to sell, seeing that the first shipments of. South Island cheese will not leave the dominion till November.

;• As there is now a township of considerable size and importance on Cashmere Hills, the residents have lately .■been thinking that some system' of lighting is necessary. Several residents fhave approached the Gas Company i-with a view to having gas laid on, (while the Trainway Board has been Considering a suggestion of lighting the township with electric light supplied Mirom the power-house. It has not yot, .been decided whether gas or electric 'light will be utilised, but the residents 'fully appreciate the need of some adequate system of illumination.

i The state of the river in the vicinity of New Brighton has for some time Spast been an eyesore to the residents ; of the popular seaside resort. Hitherto ',the weeds have been cut., and then altlowed to float down the river, instead of being dragged right out. The result ihas been that the floating weeds have 'accumulated, together with mud and eilt, and have formed numerous islands and mudbaaks, which have detracted greatly from the appearance of the river, and have blocked the channels. iiWith a view to finding a remedy for the evil, ]yir C. Opie, Mayor of New Brighton, has decided to call a meeting of boating enthusiasts and those 'interested in the state of the river. The mudbanks in the estuary have long been a. subject of complaint on the 'Sumner side, and Mr Opie suggests that a joint effort should be made by Sumner and New Brighton residents to improve the condition of the two rivers.

Mr C. H. Opie has just received a letter from his son, Ronald Opiej who was an Australasian representative in the sprint events at the recent Festival of Empire sports. Referring to the injury to his leg, the New Zealand champion said he could not understand how it originated, as he sustained it when running extremely well on a first-class track. All the New Zealanders were \inlucky, Haskins straining a tendon, ftVbodger contracting pneumonia, and Champion being seized with cramp .when winning easily. Notwithstanding his injured limb, Opie performed very well, Hardwick alone of the Australasian team being more sin essful. Tn the Empire furlong championship Opie finished second after suffering fearful -torment, and he won his heat in the English furlong championship. After this event he was unable to walk for some time, and was ordered by his doctor into the country, where he fast recuperated, and is now "extraordinarily fit and well." Opie left England by the Rotorua on August 3. and is expected to arrive in New Zealand on September 16.
