THE MEMORIAL FUND.

A meeting ot' the Executive Committee of tiie 'r. E. Taylor Memorial Fund was held at the Council Chambers yesterday afternoon. The Mayor prosided, and there were also present Messrs G. T. Booth, G. Bowron, H. Holland, C. E. Salter, C. ii. and J. M'Combs (secretary). Tito honorary treasurer (Mr k..altei) reported that ihe total amount of casri received by him to date amounted to £4tio los 3d, ot' which sum £3OO hao been placed on deposit with the Cniistchurcli City Council, at call, bearing o per cent interest. The treasuiei s action was approved, and. it was lesolvetl that a iurtlier sum of £IOO should be similarly placed, and each complete £IOO received. On the motion of Mr M Combs it v> as resolved that Mr C. H. Gilby should be appointed joint secretary to act witli Mr J. M'Combs. The joint secretaries were requested to communicate with the gentlemen whose names had been added to the list ol members of the general committee since its last meeting, informing them of their appointment. Mr M'Combs reported fully as to what had been done by the, joint secretaries since the previous meeting of the Executive, in the way ot bringing the fund under the notice of the public (generally. He reported that circulais and subscription lists had been forwarded to the editors of all the leading newspapers of the dominions; to the A Favors of cities, boroughs and town districts; chairmen of county councils, road boards and road districts, asking them to call public meetings in their respective districts, and to co-operate with the committee in its effort to make the memorial fund a truly national movement. The sympathetic cooperation had also been invited of the following organisations, to which subscription lists had been sent:—Employers' Associations, Chambers of Commerce, ministers of religion, no-license organisations, subscribers, chairmen of School Committees. Trades and Labour Councils, Trades Unions of Workers, Unions of Employers, Women's Christian Temperance Unions, Farmers' Unions, Caledonian Societies, as well as a number of storekeepers and private individuals who had applied for collecting lists. It was further reported that practically every newspaper that had been approached had expressed its sympathy and promised its cordial co-operaticn. Invereargill reported that the Mayor had convened a public meeting. In Dunedin the Executive of the Nolicense Council had held a meeting. The borough of Mornington had opened a subscription list in its office. The Outram Town Board had advertised that lists were open at the Board's office. The Clinton Town Board had arranged with stores to take charge of the subscription lists. Kaiapoi friends were helping. The " Ashburton Guardian" and Ashburton County Council had opened subscription lists. The Lyttelton Borough Council was taking steps to collect subscriptions. The Rangiora Borough Council had appointed lady collectors. Temuka. reported that subscription lists were circulated. The borough of Westporfc advised that the Council had decided to convene a public meeting. The nolicense organisation in Reefton was taking the matter up actively. The town clerk of Wellington reported that a meeting was held last Wednesday, when a strong committee was set up, with the Mayor of Wellington as chairman, Mr G. M'Laren, M.P., as secretary, and Mr A. R.. Atkinson treasurer. The town clerk of Johnsonville Town Board reported that a public meeting was to be held there on August 23. The town clerk of Wanganui East reported that the lists had been taken charge of by the Mayor and others. The town clerk of Napier reported, on behalf'of the Mayor, that 1 ists had been distributed. The town clerk of the borough of Gisboriio reported that the Mayor had taken the matter in hand, and was arranging to call a meeting of citizens. Cambridge reported that the most influential men in the town had the matter in hand, and had set up a committee with this end in view. Auckland City Council reported that subscription lists, with letter attached, were lying in the town clerk's office. Tn addition, Mr Wesley Spragg and a strong committee had the matter in hand, and were meeting with much success. The provincial secretaries of the Farmers' Union throughout the dominion had taken charge of and were organising the distribution of collect-ing-lists among their various branches. The secretary (Mr T. M'Combs) reported that, up to the present, comparatively few lists hod been returned. A letter was read from Mr H. H. Clifford, photographer, Christchurch, stating that be had an excellent copyright photograph of the late Mr TV E. Taylor, and that lie would be pleased to donate a royalty of one shilling i>er copy on ail photographs sold by him, if the committee would advertise that copies were for sale at his studio. It was decided, after consideration, to accent Mr Clifford's offer, subject to the approval of relatives. Mr H. Diederichsen, of Fuller's Collosseum Theatre, wrote, offering the sendees of his orchestra to give a. Sunday concert in aid of the fund. It was decided to thank Mr Diederichson for his generous offer, and to inform him that the committee must reyretfuliv decline it.

A cordial vote of thanks was passed to the following firms for printing done on behalf of the fund Christchnrch " Press." " Lyttelton Times," Messrs Whit-combe and Tombs, Ltd.. Willis and Aitken, Ltd., Yates and Bullivant, Smith and Anthony, Ltd., Weeks, Ltd., Bale, Schwartz, and Wyatt, Andrews and Co., and Erasers, Ltd. Tim meeting then adjourned to Tuesday. August 29.
