CASHEL STREET MYSTERY.
THE CASE AGAINST SADLER. BEFORE THE APPEAL COURT. [Per Press Association.] "WELLINGTON, July 6. A further stage was reached in tho Cnshel Street mystery this morning, when tho case reserved by Mr Justice Denniston in Hps v. Sadler came before the* Court, of Appeal. The Chief .Instiro (Sir Robert Stout) and Justices Williams, Dcnniston. 'Edwards and Sim constituted the Court. Though the proceedings took the form of a case reserved. they were also in effect an application for a new trial. It will be remembered that at. the trial the jury found Sadler guilty of manslaughter, adding a strong recommendation to mercy. The theory put forward by the' Crown, at. the trial and accepted by the jury was that- the woman Ethel Bradley had been brought to Sadler's shop to have an illegal operation performed by Sadler, and that, in pursuance of this design Sadler bad unintentionally administered a dose of prusgic acid (.hydrocyanic acid), believing it. to be an extract of hydrastis, which is sometimes used to procure abortion, the two being identical in appearance. The questions for the opinion of tho Appeal Court are:—(l) Was there evidence upon which the jury could properly convict- the prisoner ; (2) was the verdict against tho weight of the evidence ? Mr T. G. Russell and Mr M. Donnelly appear for the prisoner Sadler, and Mr T. W. Stringer., K.C., and Mr Neave for the Crown. Mr Cassidy and Mr Raymond watched the proceedings on behalf of Jack, who is awaiting trial in connection with the same matter. Judgment was reserved.
