It was still raining in the Auckland province this morning, hut elsewhere in the dominion the weather was fine. At Hawera to-day Andrew Hastie Was fined £lO and costs for failure to taake a return of his land and mortgage In furtherance of the Opposition campaign, Mr James Allen, M.P., will rpeak at Hamilton on May 9 and at Taumarunui on the following night. On the application of a woman, Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., granted a pension in full at a sitting of the Oldt Age Pension Court at Lyttelton this morning. An Order-in-Council will be published this week protecting " Pelorus Jack" for a further term of three years. A penalty of not less than £5, or more than £IOO, has been fixed for infringement of the order. The Christtehurch Nursing Division of the St John Ambulance Brigade met on Monday evening. There was a good attendance. The evening was devoted to a lecture on " Adenoids," given by the honorary surgeon. The " Mataura Ensign " states that the homestead block of the Longridge Estate, near Balfour, belonging to Messrs Campbell Bros., Geraldine, comprising 3300 acres, is under offer to the Government for closer settlement purposes.
In the Magistrate's Court at Auckland to-day Frank Albert Cooper pleaded guilty to five charges of Breaches of the Bankruptcy Act. including the contracting of debts without reasonable expectations of being able to pay them arid not keeping proper books. The bankrupt was previously a bankrupt in Wellington in 1907, and subsequently obtained his discharge there. He was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
