THE LICENSING LAWS.

+- [Per Press Association.] NELSON, March 20. _ A decision of importance to publicans was given in Motueka by ' Mr Evans, S.M., in a case in which a licensee was charged with selling liquor to a lodger after closing hours for consumption off the premises. The Magistrate found that the lodger had purchased the liquor bona fide for the purpose of entertaining his friends in a drive on Sunday. He held that a lodger was not entitled to constitute himself an agent for purchasing liquor for a party, but subject to this exception his right to purchase was co-extensive with the landlord's right to sell under, license. The Magistrate was satisfied that the lodger had purchased a reasonable quantity of liquor, on his own behalf, and not as an agent for the party and dismissed the information.
