Mrs Barton, a temperance lecturer, obtained a verdict for £5 for libel tigainst " Fairplay," the newspaper having stated that she gave a woman brandy. In cross-examination she stated that she could not give a dying phild brandy if instructed by a doctor. Mr Justice Pring declared that if she did not she would be guilty of manilaughter. j MAORI VILLAGERS. I The Maori villagers sailed for England after a highly successful season. 1 DAMAGE TO VINEYARDS. ' Rain caused heavy damage in the southern vineyards, which previously gave promise of a big crop. 1 TIMBER IMPORTS. I' The timber imports last year were Valued at £2,153,134. In the previous fcar the total was £1,686,552. I QUEENSLAND'S MINERAL PROV DUCTION. BRISBANE, March 15. ' The mineral production of Queensland last year amounted to £3,710,222, an increase of £53,658.
