SYDENHAM BURGESSES' ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the Sydenham Burgesses' Association was held on Tuesday evening. There was a large attendance of members, and tho president, Mr G. E. Good, was in the chair. The City Council wrote, acknowledging receipt of resolutions requesting that better attention should be given to watering and sweeping side streets, and that where residents had meters installed for their water supply that only water used for extraordinary purposes should be charged for, and that used for household and sanitary purposes should be unlimited. The letter stated that the matters would receive attention.

The Tramway Board wrote in reply to a deputation from the Association, with regard to trip tickets, height of bell-cords and double track from Moorhouse Avenue to Hastings-Street, stating that the regulations under which conductors wero not permitted to punch concession ticket numbers which had been missed could not be withdrawn. The proper inspection of tickets demanded" that the numbers should be punched in numerical order, and experience had proved that if conductors were allowed to punch back numbers they would quickly become very lax with regard to the numerical punching. It was not necessary for a person holding one of those tickets to make a special journey for the purpose of obtaining a small refund, as stated by the deputation. The refund could be made Avlien the next ticket was purcho&od. /The question of making bell-cords more accessible to short people would receive consideration. The question of double tracking a considerable portion of the Cashmere Hills line was at present under the consideration of the Board. If that was done it might be possible to divide the Opawa cars and the Sydenham cars a little better than at present, _ but on that point no definite decision could be made until the new time-table was prepared, as the greater part of the Opawa-Fendalton route would still be a single track. The sub-committee appointed to inspect River Road, Beckenham, and the banks of the Heathcote from Colombo Street Bridge to Wilson's Bridge, with a view to urging the City Council and Beautifying Association to widen and form a road between those two points, and to beautify the banks of the river, reported that it had inspected the ground, and advised that the question should bo gone into thoroughly, as it was a work that should be put in hand before any further increase of population occurred in that area. It was resolved to hold the matter over until the new City Council had taken office.

It was resolved that the City Council should be urged to light the tramway routo with electric arc lamps, and remove the gas-lamps at present hi use in those streets to streets in the outer area of the city, where they were most urgently required. The opinion was exprossed that the drain in the vicinity of Crescent Road, Sydenham, should be covered in in the interest of public health and human life, and that Antigua Street, between the railway crossing and Moorhouse Avenue, should be made the full width. It was resolved to urge the City Council to proceed with the widening of "Waltharn Road between Austin Street and Wilson's Bridge; and place a gaslamp at the corner of Waltham Road and Rogers Street. A deputation consisting of Messrs G. E. Good, E. Doreen, A. Gourley, C. Lafferty, J. T. Forrester, A. Pritchard find H. Hunter was appointed to place the resolutions before the proper authorities.

It was resolved to request the Postal authorities to place a post office post-ing-box at the corner of Madras and Brougham Streets. As a few members of the Association desired, to have the provisions of tlie Betterment Bill explained to them, it was resolved to invite Mr H. G. Ell, M.P. to attend a special meeting of the Association for the purpose. Mr Ell, who was present as a member of the Association, agreed to respond to the invitation.
