Mr G. Laurenson, M.P., arrived from Wellington by the Maori this morning. The Hon Charles Louisson, M.L.C., and Mr W. Iteeco were passengers from Wellington by the ferry steamer this morning. Mr J. D. Ritchie, chairman of the Land Purchase Commissioners, arrived from Wellington this morning, and wont on to Otago by tho first express train. A Gore telegram states that Dr .James Douglas, for many years in charge of tho hospital at Queenstown, died lasb evening, aged seventy-four. He was widely respected professionally and personally, was unmarried, and for over fifty years he was in practice. A circular mem'orandum has been issued by the Canterbury District Commandant explaining that the suspension of the sale of Martiui-Lec-Enfield rifles to rifle clubs'is only temporary. The available supplies will bo required for tho arming of the largely increased forces under the new defence scheme, and immediately new supplies are received rifles will be available for purchape by rifle clubs. A limited number of Martini-Enfield xifles are, however, on sale.
