Mr Thomas W. Duff was unanimously elected chairman of the "West-land County Council to-day. Captain M'Artlnir, of the Maoriland Steamship Company, arrived in Lyttelton by tho Maori this morning.

Messrs W. T. Chatfield, J. L. Soott, G. Beauchamp and J. Bell arrived by the Maori from Wellington this morning. Among the passengers from Wellington by the Maori to-day were the Revs J. S.' Ponder, P. S. Hay, J. J. M. Bates, J. S. Rcid, F. Rule and J. D. Brown. Mr C. D. Greenwood, Colonel and Mrs Bailey and Mr and Mrs T. Bullock, who arrived in Wellington by the M.arama on Wednesday, namo to Lyttelton by the Maori this morning.
