CHEISTCHCRCH. Wednesday, August 24. (Before Mr H. J. Otlev, J.F., and Mr H. J.P.) Remaxdfd.—William Henry Allen, charged with being a rogue and vagabond, elected to be tried by a .jury, and was remanded until August 31. By-law Breaches. —Charles Willcox, for having cycled at night without a light, was fined 10s and costs. Reuben Whitford, for having driven too quickly over a crossing, was fined 10s and costs, and W. S.: Wofttou. who attempted to drive stock over a railway crossing when a train was approaching, was fined 20s and costs. Theft. —James Boattie (Mr Dougall) pleaded not guilt}' to a charge of having stolen a bicycle valued at £5, the property of Adnams Bros. Evidence was given by J. Adnams that accused had come to him and ordered a now machine, borrowing a. bicycle valued at. £0 to ride in the meantime. He did not/make the payments he had promised, and it was found that he had sold the machine without permission. Accused contradicted the story told by Adnams, and said that he had permission to sell the machine. He was convicted and fined 40s, being given a week in which to find the money. The Court also ordered the return of the bicycle or payment of £O. in default one month's imprisonment, (Before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M.) A Buokkn Ordkk.—Arthur Hnuglicy pleaded guilty to a charge'' of having been drunk in Linwood. As the offence was the second within six months, the Magistrate imposed a fine of 10s, or forty-eight hours' imprisonment. For having committed a breach of a prohibition order Haughey was fined 20s or fourteen days' imprisonment. He asked for time to- pay, but Mr Bishop, after looking at his record, said, " You can take', it out."
