ALLEGED ROBBERY.

ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL, ffeefore Mr H. J. Otley, J.P., find Mr if. Pearce, J.P., this morning, Thomas Collins (Mr Donnelly) was charged with having robbed Luko Haughey, with violence, of a sum of about 13s. Haughey gave evidence that on August 12 ho had been in a number of hotels, and had gone with accused to a boarding-house. Inside the gate accused had knocked witness down and caught him by the throat, demanding money. He had then searched witness's pockets, and had got 12s or 14s. Accused had then run away. In reply to Mr Donnelly, th© witness said that' he was pretty "drunk at the time. He did not remember changing £l, but ho knew that ho had about 14s in his pocket. He was drunk when the case was first called, and was too bad from drink to attend the Court again last Friday. He had been brought to Christchurch under arrest from Port Levy.

John Diffen gave evidence that as he was going in the gate of the boardinghouse lie had heard a man call out that ho was being robbed: "Witness said, "What are you doing there?" and accused jumped off Haughey and ran away. He had called Knight. the proprietor of the house, whoJiad helped him to search, and they had found Haughey's hat and two threepenny bits. He had later on pointed accused out to a constable.

Evidence was given by Silas Knight and a constable.

Mr Donnelly submitted that the whole of the case rested on the evidence of the drunken man Haughey. Accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed for trial at the next sessions of the Supreme Court. Bail was allowed in two sureties of £SO each.
