President Taft, in a letter to Mr firiscom, referring to the temporary chairmanship, declares that' lie does not- suppose that there is any doubt that Mr Roosevelt will prove satisfactory. He urged upon Mr Sherman the 'necessity for taking Mr Roosevelt into "••his fullest confidence, and after the 'committee's meeting he informed Mr. Sherman that tlie result was deplorable, as the breach, unless repaired, 1 "meant the possible defeat of the Republicans. Mr Griscom predicts a reversal of the committee's action, and adds that Mr Roosevelt will make a keynote speech •as a temporary chairman.
