CHRISTCIIURCH. Tuesday, August 2. (Before Mr H. W, Bishop, S.M.)

Drunkenness.—A statutory fiigfj offender for drunkenness, who was an old ago pensioner, was fined 5s and costs, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment.—Mary Ann Seymour, who had been-previously convicted, was fined 20s and costs, in default seven days' imprisonment.

A Recalcitrant Husband.—-Charles M'Queen Oairney (Mr Leathern) was charged with having attempted to desert his /wife, for whom Mr Donnelly appeared. Mr Leathern said that Cairney was working in a store at Hawarden. Hr Donnelly, for tho plaintiff, said that the defendant had not treated his wife well. A little while ago he had suddenly left home, and it was believed that he Avas keeping another woman. An order was made for the payment of 10s a week for the support of the wife and 5s for a child, the custody of which was given to the plaintiff. Theft of Overcoats.—John Maine admitted three charges of stealing overcoats. Tho police stated that Maine had been, sentenced for theft in Wellington, and yesterday had been sentenced to three months' imprisonment for the theft of a marble clock. Maine pleaded to be given a sentence that, would grajht him liberty when there was work about. He was sentenced to three mc'iiths' imprisonment on each charge, one to be concurrent with the one he is now serving, and the other to be, cumulative and to take effect at the conclusion of his present term.

Prohibition' Order and Liquor.George Hand was fined 10s and costs, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment, for having obtained liquor during the currency of a prohibition order.
