BUILDING TJIADE STRIKE IN CHICAGO." LONDON, July 2S

AN APPLICATION DISMISSED. SYDNEY, July 28. The Industrial Court dismissed tho Colliery Employees' Federation's application for tho dissolution of the Northern Collieries Wages Board. The president, in giving judgment, said it was admitted that tho whole object was to get rid of Mr Paterson, tho employees' representative. He had come to the conclusion that a sufficient case had not been made out to justify him holding an investigation into Mr Paterson's conduct in order to find out whether he was incapable or had been guilty of misconduct or prevarication.
THE LABOUR MARKET IN WEL-
LINGTON. [From Our Correspondent:.] WELLINGTON, July 28. At this time last winter a citizens' relief committee in Wellington was set ■up to provide 'work for unemployed. Many of the labouring classes had to undergo privations because there was nothing offering for them, to do. The winter this year has not been so harsh and there has been no cry on the part of the casual labourer and artisan for assistance. There ha« been more -work of all descriptions- offering and fewer men seeking it. This statement is generally acknowledged by secretaries of industrial unions. Inquiries made from tho Labour Department show that there .is no comparison between the conditions existing her© this winter and the corresponding period last year. Conditions now are infinitely better. There has not been such a big demand for unskilled labourers as in. 1909. The Department • has been trying to get four skilled quarrymen, but up to the present has only been able- to get one. There lias also been a demand for" miners at the Taupiri coal-mine, Huntly, but tho men have been unobtainable. The approaching spring and summer, so far as employment goes, will probably be ono of toe;best on record. , Applications for farm hands have already > been 'received, and there is likely to be an improvement all round.
