BURMAM'S HOLIDAY.
SPORTS AT THE INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL. Though a heating nor'-wester insisted on blowing during th« day, the Christmas sports at the Buraham Industrial School yesterday were particularly enjoyable. A large v number of people went out from Christchurch to the school, and the sports^ were in every way successful. The wholehearted houpitality of Burnham was extended to all, and no effort was spared" by the staff to make the day one of pleasure for. the boys and the visitors. Lieutenant-Colonel Hawkins and his staff were present at the sports, and inspected the School Cadets, who gave exhibitions of physical drill and signalling. After lunch .the sports were held in the big recreation ground, and then swimming events were held, some! novel competitions being introduced by the boys. Among those present were. Lieutenant-Colonel Cooper, the Rev T.' J. Smyth, the Rev C. E. P. Webb and Mr F. J. Board, a member, of the Board of Advice. Apologies for absence were received from Bishop-* Grimes, Mr C. A. C. Hardy, M.P., and Mr G. Witty, M.P. During the afternoon Mr Board briefly addressed those present, and, after thanking them for their kindly interest in the school, spoke in eulogistic terms of the work done by Mr Archey and his staff. There was not a man in the dominion, he 6aid, more fitted than Mr Archey was. for the position, and the institution was. doing a great work and doing it successfully. Mr Archey briefly replied, and thank, ed those "present for their attendance and also the donors of the prizes, In the evening a Christmas tree provided a number of gifts for the boys, and the prizes were presented. The, following is the list of prizewinners: — Mrs C. A. G. Hardy's gold medal — Thomas S. M. West. Mr P. J. Board's prize (silver watch)-*-James P. Bhode^.
