THE POOR AND NEEDY.
As far as the poor and needy are concerned, the year has been very little different from its predecessors. The Charitable Aid Board, as usual, has been kept very busy, giving relief and attending to the institutions which are in its charge. There has been no diminution in tne numbers of applicants for relief. If anything, the tendency^has been to increase the demands made on the 1 Board. It has been felt more than ever this year that there is a .feeling amongst some classes of the community that they can legitimately shift their responsibilities in regard to old and helpless relatives on to the shoulders of the Board. • It has not been a very unusual occurrence for people to go to the Board ? s officers and state that they would be glad if the Board would take into its homes tiresome old relatives. Some of these receive the old age pension, and offers are made to magnanimously let the sums go to the Board if it will be kind enough _to undertake private responsibilities which strong- and healthy people seem to be very anxious to get rid of.
