Both speeds are S obtained by friction engagements, no dog clutches with attendant shocks B being employed. Direct dr^ve on top gear. Gear wheels are always in • n mesh, and entirely at rest on top gear. A neat and substantial lever [1 operates both speeds. Changes of gear can be made without the slightest jar or noise, and, what is most important, without any shock to the gears. To start-up the rider simply presses down the bicycle pedal, the machine at rest, wheels on the ground. Thiß starts the engine, when the rider has merely to seat himself and pull the lever towards him, and off the machine goes at a slow pace. The lever is then pushed forward to attain- the normal . gear. A free engine-clutch alone is only good for starting or for use in . dense traffic, whereas with a two-speed "Nala " hub any hill can be climbed, and dangerous corners negotiated, at a slow and comfortable pace, regardless . of the gradient.
