NAVY LEAGUE ESSAYS.

RESULT QF COMPETITION. Some time ago theHCanterbury branch of the Navy League announced an essay competition for secondary schools, District - High'Bohools and primary schools. The subjects for the two classes in the secondary . and District High School division weretr-^Over sixteen years — "How can the British Empire outside the United Kingdom cooperate most effectually with the British IJavyP' Under sixteen— "The expansion- of, the British Empire in the reign- of Queen Victoria, with special refeflac© to the part played by the British Navy<" In the division for primary schools the subject was— "The meaning arid ■, use of Empire Day." Them were two classes, over thirteen years and under thirteen years. Of the sub-committee appointed to examine the essays, Only Professors F. W. Haskun and T. (J. R. Blunt acted, the other two members, being headmasters of competing schools, preferring to take no part in the judging. The following are the results: — .. Secondary Schools.— Over sixteen — R. A. R. Lowry (Boys' High School); 1; Irene Buclchurßt {Girls' High School, 2. Tfrider sixteen— o." E. White (West Ohristehureh District Hish Sohool). 1 ; J. V. Wilson (Boys' Hi?h Sohool), 2.
