Ek Hofmeyr -was born on July 4, 1845. He was educated a<{ S.A. College, Cape Town. He repr«-j seated -Cape Colony at the Ottawa Ooiw, . ference, with Sir Henry de Villiera aridf Sir Charles Mills. As a journalist, h« edited at Cape Town the "Volkw vriend," " Zuid Afrikan " and tto "Z.A. Tydschrift." Mr Andrew Malcolm, who during <thflj last quarter of a century had been, one of the most successful primary aeb«6l teachers in the Canterbury province) died earjy this morning at nis resi- , dence, Fisher Street, Sydenham, aftexi au illness extending over about iii months. A native of Clackmannan^ Scotland, where he was born in March. ■'.. 1838, Mr Malcolm was educated ; at.. Letham, in Fifeshire, arid early adopter ed teaching as a profession! On th«Jr + completion of a period of training, hef was appointed' Superintendent of th« ' Dumfries Industrial School, which hi conducted successfully for some years, _ and later was promoted to a similar^' ' position in the Leith Industrial Schnpoly, where he was equally successful. In[ 1881 he arrived in New Zealand by ihe( _ ship Dunedin, and immediately afteivi.o wards was appointed headmaster of th* Hinds School. He remained thejhe jf# sv three years, and in 1884 became *headi oi ' master of the Longbeach ..School, *'■!&.'■ ■>' I^B6 he was appointed master of th« ' ; View Hill School, and two,yeir» liptwu/ removed to Marshland, then known *4Rhodes' s Swamp, where he filled theposition of headmaster for about; seven^f/ teen years, retiring on superannuations * some three years ago. In July of $he v '; present year, Mr and Mrs ; Malcolnt celebrated their golden wedding., .He is survived by a widow, a son (Mr Robertr -> A.
