Three, men, named Stewart, Macdonald and Jones, who were driving a. gig along Barbadoes- Street between six and seven o'clock- 'on Saturday evening, came to grief at the corner of Worcester Street in a collision with an incoming ±>urn r ood steam tram. •. • The men. had previously been observed by Constable J. J. M'Cormack, who endeavoured to stop them for furiously driving over the intersection of Colomv ho and Cashel Streets, but they whipped up the horse and got away. It is thought that they did not hear the cars approaching, and just as they got on the line the engine struck - the cart. The cart was completely ruined, and the horse, a trotter, which was highly valued by tho owner, was severely injured, sustaining a wound in the eide and on one of the fore legs, while one shoe was torn off. Constable M'Cormack, who arrived on the. scene shortly afterwards, arrested two of the'-.,men,'' one on a charge of drunkenness while in charge of a liorso and trap, and' the other on a charge of drunkenness.
