The Council of the Unirersiiy of Oxford has Agreed to the principle that Greek should no longer be compulsory, for the degree of arts. (Speaking to a reporter to-day in regard to this message, Professor Etaslam said that the announcement was an important one. If the Council's endonsement of the principle wast the final act m dealing with the question* the announcement was extremely important, and the result would be very farreaching.. Apparently, the .proposal to abolish Greek as a compulsory subject was part of a larger movement in the direction, of popularising the Oxford University and bringing It into touch with, the working classes. An effort had been made to establish, a University extension principle. It was proposed that should be found&fl in the large cities, where classes for working men could be held. Lectures would be delivered, and working men would attend and would pass examinations: If any of * the students showed promise^ they would 'be invited to go up to Oxford, and would probably be assisted. He did not tliink that the steheme would be successful./ As a matter of fact, there* was fao call for it. In most "of the centres in England, such as Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham and other cities thejre were Universities, and many other institutions existed where the working man. could get all that he wanted'; He'felt^indeed, that it was a gr^ctt mistake for the Oxford University to attempt to do work ,of the. description which was being done hy? ■■ other institution's.
