CORRESPONDENCE.

— . — «. — TO THE IDITOK. Sir, — I am taking a great interest in the big fight now going on, and have written the following verses, which I shall be very glad if you will allow to appear through the medium of your paper: — AN APPEAL. As you passed through the busy, city street*, Some night, on your homeward way; If a bairn, with its weak, unsteady steps, Rushed out where a danger lay — Then your arm. would be there to guard and to save, Though you knew your life must pay. If you saw, in your walk, a burning- homeOne tower of devouring- flame — And o'er the roar, from an upper room, The cries of 4 woman came; Then your foot would be first in the fireswept stair, / You -would count to linger— shame. If you stood by the wind-tossed sea some eve;, And saw, on a distant wave, A. speck that you knew held a life ,like yours Which would soon have found its grave; Then your voice, would xing clear in its pledge of aid, And your heart be strong to save. As you passed by a brilliant drinking hall, And out of its doors reeled men AnH women, alas, with their brains on fire, Was your mind as wakeful then? Will your heart and your spirit be steadfast still When your fingers guide the pen? For the time -will come, and 'ti3 r.ear this day, When your hand must, join the fight; Will its power go forth to prciect the weak, And lessen their tempter's might? Will your vote make the Jives of the children sweet ? Be Btrong in the cause of right. Trusting you will insert this. — I am, etc., LUCY MURRAY.
