FIRES.
OTTTBBiEAK AT TEMUKA. [Per Pkess Association.] TIMARU, August 24. Another destructive fire occurred at Temuka at 2.15 yesterday morning, when four shops were destroyed. Three of these belonged to Dr Hayes and the other to Mr T. Edwards. All the buildings destroyed were of wood, and the flames ran through them very quickly. The origin of the fire i& a mystery. Dr Hayes is a heavy loser, as he had only £50 of insurance on each of his three shops, all in the Norwich Union Office. Mr Edwards is also a heavy loser. His shop was insured for £200 in the Manchester Office. The tenants, who also are all losers by the fire, were insured as follows:— H." Carl (chemist), £400 in the Phoenix, Jacobs • (fancy goods) £200 in the Standard, C. Vincent (saddler) £100 in tho South British, and A. Prosser (bootmaker) £400 in the State Office. The aggregate loss of the tenants is estimated «t £650. During the past eighteen months thirteen business places have been destroyed by fire in Temuka. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, August 24. A fire occurred in an engine-shed at | the Onehunga railway station on Sunday morning. When discovered the flames, were bursting; through the roof, but one ongino had enough steam to permit of its being driven out wiu. a second engine in tow, both escaping wit 1 ' very slight damage. Tho engineslied was gutted.
