OTAGO v. CANTERBURY.

[From Oub Correspondent.] DUNEDIN, August 22. In the interprovincial hockey match Otago beat Canterbury by two goals to nil. In the first spell the play was pretty even. Canterbury's chance seemed to lie in the weakness of the Otago half-backs, who did not seem to understand where to send the ball or where it was likely to go. On the other hand, the Canterbury forwards showed a want of combination, and as tho Otago backs and goal-keeper were reliable, Canterbury's attacks were fruitless. Nevertheless, it was a hard, fast game, won by the better team. In the first spell Cuttle, had tlie ball passed back to him and scored the first goal, from right in front, with a hard clean shot, the Canterbury men were very quick in their movements, and went in for more speculating than their opponents. They relied riiore on their sticks than their hands in fielding the ball, a habit engendered by their playing on the smoother ground of Christchurch. ■ Rutherford scored Otago's second goal in the first spell. Otago had an undeniably good forward line, and to them was largely due the homo team's win. Rutherford played a clever name on the wing, and Cuttle and Wadill -were both in excellent fettle. Among the backs Johnson was very ably supported by Ryburn (cftptain) and White, the last-named playing a very safe game. On the Canterbury side, among.the forwards the wings Avere inclined to be weak, and they made the mistake of straying from their places. At full-back Campbell played a fine game, and Ackroyd (captain) did a --a-eat --leal of most useful defensive x*/ork. Tlie half-back line — Snell. Anderson and Harrieran —was superior to Otago's, all three playing well. Turton was safe in goal. Mr T. Hellyer was referee.
