SOME PRISON FIGURES.

Of the prisoners who went to New Zealand gaols during 1907 no. fewei than 212 males and 22 females vreri unable to read or write, and 88 male} and 16 females could only read. Forig males and one female were creditec with "superior education," and 466 c males and 534 females were able tc read and write. During the year I9o< the prisoners committed to gaols in. the dominion who had "been there before " numbered 2391 males and 404 females. Of that total 1469 males anc 331 females had been there three timei or moire, and 589 males and 33 female* Went up for the second time. Among tho offences dealt with by visiting Ju» tices at the various gaols of the-,do-minion during 1907 six were describee 86 " smoking in his cell," and one ai H smoking in the yard after being ckm turned." No explanation is given o: the fact that the prisoners were in pos session of smoking materials. The far ourite punishment for offences against the regulations appears 'to be "breac and water," but in one case, and one case only, there is the dread verdici "tobacco stopped during remainder o. sentence." :1 y
