SOMNOLENT SUMNER.

A fanner friend sends along a story from his poultry yard. He vouches for tho truth, but in view of the tall nature of the yarn " The Week " is not prepared to be hold responsible for the accuracy of the facts: But, to the story. Four years ago the farmer put a sitting of duck eggs under a portly Plymouth Rock hen. The young ducks took to the water immediately — at first Mrs Plymouth Rock was hysterical, but she grew to regard the conduct of her young with philosophical calmness. The fanner kept repeating the experiment till the old hen took it as a matter of course that her children should jump into the water. This year she was given some valuable game hen eggs, which cost a sovereign for thirteen, and in due course she came off the nest with twelve young swashbuckling chicks. She led them to the duck pond, but they ran away. She seemed disgusted and made the same fruitless journey every day for a week. Finally, one morning she led her dozen to the pond one by one and pushed them into the water until all were drowned.
