Captain Peter Hams, who was Stationed at Fort Hamilton, had sued for divorce, while Mrs Hams, on Annis's advice, had counter-sued for divorce, alleging grave misconduct involving several military officers. She declared Thornton Hams, who is the author of penny horribles, the villain of the tragedy, and made serious allegations regarding army life at isolated posts. All the parties are well known, and the case has attracted , attention similar to the Thaw-White tragedy. (A cablegram received oil Tuesday said :_Captain Hams, of the United States Artillery, with his brother Thornton, the sons of General Hams, who distinguished himself in the CubanSpanish war, waited at the landing stage of a yacht club at Long Island, amid a crowd of fashionable pleasureseekers, until William Annis, a New York publisher, landed, when the captain snot Annie six times, with fatal results. 'While the tragedy was being \ enacted, the captain's brother, with a revolver, kept the crowd back. Captain Hams declares that Annis ruined his young wife. Foreseeing a collision, Mrs : Annie vainly tried to prevent her husband from landing.)
