♦ [Per Pkess Association.] • ELTHAM, August 18. Mr G. P. Wake, a Liberal candidate for the Egmont seat, addressed a meeting: at Eltham last night. H^ defended fhe Government finance, and combated the idea that the Government was opposed to the farmers. He suggested an amendment to the Arbitration Act by making unions deposit a sum with the Government before they were registered, and by the automatic cancellation of the registration of unions that offended. In reply to a question, he said that he was a prohibitionist and favoured the retention of the three-fifths majority. He was accorded a- vote of thanks. It is understood that Mr D. M'Kenzie, who some time ago announced his intention of becoming a candidate for the Hutt seat in the Labour interest, has decided to retire from the ■contest. The "Oamaru Mail " states that MiRichard Meredith, who represented Ashley for several years, has decided to become a candidate for the Waitaki seat at the coming election in opposition to Sir William.
