WELLINGTON, August 17.
The criminal sessions of the Supreme* Court commenced' to-day, before Mr Justice Cooper. In his charge to the Grand Jury. Mr Justice Cooper said that there was a considerable njimber of cases to be investigated, but none of them were of aft exceptionally serious nature, although he regretted to say that of the seventeen, oases there were six offences against morality. Other cases were charges of theft, breaking and entering, assault and robbery, and theft from the person. Herbert "William M'Kay, who had pleaded guilty to- a charge- of theft of sums of money from his employers, Messrs Mills and Co., was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment. Edward Thomas, alias Edxvard Hughes, on a charge of forgery, received a sentence of two years' imprisonment.
DUNEDIN, August 17
The Supreme Court criminal sessions opened this morning before Mr Justice Williams. The Grand Jury returned no bill in the case of Elizabeth Evelyn M'Leod, concealment of birth. Owen Patrick Brcenallan pleaded guilty to a charge of having illegally pawned jewellery, and, was sentences to twelve months' imprisonment. Daisy Edwards pleaded guilty to a charge or having permitted An instrument to be used, with intent to procure a mieeamage, and was sentenced to fiix months' lmpri*eoninont. Mr Justice Williams remarking that the case did not come within the Probation Act, and that it would never do to let it go abroad that a woman who permitted such a serious offence could go free because of her otherwise good character.
