Mr Percy Maxim, son oi' the famous inventor (says the New York correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph"), has given a tirst demonstration of his noiseless gun, whose awful potentialities, according to enthusiastic friends here., were to achieve a perfect revolution i» the art of warfare. The practical demonstration was guven in a crowded room for the benefit of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. It is believed that animals may be more humanely killed than by the poleaxe. Mr Maxim fired a shot from a .32-cah-bre Winchester rifle at two heavy city directories. His silencer comprises a series of aluminium cells, fitted with an interior equipment that automatically cuts off the gases from sudden escape after the bullet has passed from the rifle barrel. The gases escape slowly and consequently without noise, through the cells fitted to the rifle barrel. There was just the click of the hammer, a slight hissing sound, and the thud of the bullet.
