Dr Westwater, the famous Presbyterian missionary, recently arrived in England from Manchuria, where h© has been instrumental in breaking down Chinese prejudice to Western ways. Dr We&twater is -a medical man, whose services to humanity have been acknowledged by the Governments of China, Russia and Japan, and it is all the more singular that the British Government has withheld from him the official recognition he undoubtedly deserves. He has spent twenty-five years in Manchuria, and stood between the few European residents and annihilation at the time of the Boxer # rising. In the Russo-Japanese campaign his services to Russians and Chinese brought on him a deal of- odium on the part of the Japanese. Few men in China exercise such individual influence as Dr Westwater, and he is worshipped by the Cmne§e and. revered by all foreigners*.
