PROPOSED SPREYDON DOMAIN

A meeting of about twenty-five residents of Spreydon, Tankerville and Hillmorton was held in. fche Spreydon School last evening, to consider a proposal to secure a recreation ground for the district. Mr D. Sykes presided.

The chairman said that great advan-t-sigo would result from having a good recreation ground. Ho had been given tho refusal for three months of 22 acres in the Lyttelton Estate, lying between the Heathcoto and Mill Road, about ten chains from the tramline. The section was known as v The Brooms, 5 and was a long narrow strip, containing a natural torrace, at present overgrown with scrub. It was dry, and oven now popular as a picnic resort. Tho prico asked for it wa6 £60 an acre, making a total required of about £1300. Ifcr Auston had offered the gift of a strip' of land to make an entrance from Hoon Hay Road, crossing the river, for the benefit of the Tankerville people. The Commissioner of Crown Lands had inspected the ground, and had promised to recommend that the Government should give a subsidy of £ for £ towards tbe purchase of the ground, and had advised that it should be taken under the Domain Boards Act, instead of being vested in trustees. Mr R. Nairn had promised to donate enough shrubs to plant the reserve if it was obtained. The raising of funds could be done by publio subscription, by means of bazaars and other such means, and by contributions from local bodies, including the Tramway Board.

Mr G. Witty, M.P., said that tho area was practically the only one in the district now available for a public reserve, and the chance of securing it should not be lost. A Bill was in hand empowering the conversion of part of the Riccarton roserve to provide other reserves about the district, and he hoped •that that would assist financially in attaining the object of the me-tins*.

It was resolved that a committee, consisting of Messrs J. Woolf, D. Sykes, H. W. Manning, J. Thomas, D M'Nicol, F. Blumskey and H. E. Gott Bhould proceed at once with the steps neccfi-savy to secure the land.
