' The Federal Government has promised to take action with a view to prohibiting the importation or exportation of certain, skins and plumage, in order to prevent the wholesale destruction, of ' birds at the call of fashion. PIGEONS FOR MILITARY PURPOSES. The Federal Minister of Defence intends to include in the Estimates a sum to promote the breeding of the best types of homing pigeons for defence purposes. COMPULSORY MILITARY TRAINING. / SYDNEY, August 5. At the Farmers' Conference, it was decided to support the. compulsory training of young men for defence purposes. A SENTENCE COMMUTED. The death sentence passed on Green, the murderer of Bridge, has been commuted to penal sei*vitude for life.
